Visiting Dichato in the south of Chile I was able to see the reconstruction through which this village underwent after the 2010 earthquake tsunami destroyed it. It was stunning to see how so many years later there were still deep marks from the destruction trail left by that huge wave.
The survivors tell that when the earthquake, started the population naturally ran to the mountains but after hearing in the radio that the risk of tsunami was over and that it was safe to return home they did it. When they went back to their houses the tsunami hit killing more than 150 people.
In present times there is a more devastating wave, a wave that is overwhelming our society but in a silent mode, the wave of pornography. But what is pornography? Pornography is a set of images that stimulate vulgar sexual thoughts. In the past these images would come in limited fashion trough some magazines but in our days it comes openly through the internet.
Pornography is highly addictive; it becomes an insatiable habit that imprisons people to its consumption. Like any other drug, the consumer has difficulty to accept its own addiction and is incapable to see how it affects the others, how it interferes in his or her human relations, mainly in the relationship with his or her spouse. Sadly 70% of men and 40% of women who attend church are already consumers of this product.
There is nothing ugly about human sexuality, after all it was God who created it and who recommended it. But pornography puts things out of context distorting the human intimacy, denigrating the love act to an animalistic one.
If the citizens of Dichato would have stayed out of the tsunami reach, their destiny would have been much happier. Likewise our horizon can be much better if we manage to stay away from this nasty wave of pornography.
- What do you think is wrong about pornography?
- How can you avoid pornography?
(Looking for pure thoughts, Philippians 4:8 / Avoiding impure thoughts, Mathew 5:28)
Oooh wow, this will help a lot with my youth. Thanks a lot for an eye opener
ReplyDeleteYes, pornography is not as harmeless as some people like to believe.
DeleteThank you for this commissioner! But how does one escape this addiction?
ReplyDeleteDear friend, as any addiction one needs to accept the fact of being addicted, and afterwards deal with it. The issue is not only to avoid the images but the reason behind wanting to whatch them.
DeleteIf a soldier comes to me as an Officer confessing that he/she is struggling with this addiction. What can I do as an Officer to help?
ReplyDeleteDear officer, you can help him/her to understand the seriourness of that addiction and to identify the reasons driving him/her to it. As any addiction discipline to intentionally move awasy from it is necessary.
DeleteInteresting read but there is a lot to learn from this especially coming from communities that see it as a taboo talking about sexuality
ReplyDeleteDear reader, you are right. Depending on or upbringing, sexual issues are not somenthing talked about. But as Christians we must allow the Word of God to direct us in all issues os our life. Many blessings!
DeleteThank you for the platform Commissioner, it is time we practice to laying ourselves on the Altar of God and present ourselves as living sacrifice. Allowing the Holy Spirit to consume every aspects of our lives that is contrary to God's moral law.God will not burn some part of the sacrifice and leave out some part. THE fire of God consumes . HAVE WE OFFERED OURSELVES AS A LIVING SACRIFICE?
ReplyDeleteThe rule of thomb is, what cannot be dedicated to the Lord must be renounced but what cannot be renounced must be dedicated to the Lord
DeletePornography can result in the distortion of beliefs, leading to unnatural perceptions about sexuality and the development of negative feelings about oneself. But it is also an exploitation of those men and women who take the creation of pornographic materials as a means to an end. It exacerbates the world's problem of human trafficking and slavery. But, as you have pointed out, Commissioner, pornography is so easily accessible, even by children, on internet in our days. The statistics you shared (70% men and 40% women in church) is quite scary. We need to listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit as he convicts us of this sin in the our world, as well as convicting us of God's righteousness. In this way we can avoid pornography.
ReplyDeleteDear reader, thank you for your comment. Very true, you added the expoitation of those involved in the pornography production. May the Lord help us to avoit this terrible tsunami. Many blessings!
DeleteThank you, Commissioner. Whilst dealing with Human Trafficking we have come across many ways that the pornography industry is linked to the crime of HT. We have to start talking more openly about the values of good moral behaviour. We have children as young as 10 having abortions in South Africa and we have young girls (one I spoke to was 16) having multiple sex partners. We have the highest rate of HIV not because we are more sexually promiscuous but because we (as a nation) tend to have more casual sex partners. Pornography is an addiction and to prevent it we need good accountability partners and have good practices in place to deal with the addiction in a loving non-judgemental way.
