In the last book of the bible God defines himself as the “Alpha and the Omega”, that is, the beginning and the end. In other words, God is the past and also the future! This truth if particularly revealing when we understand it under the concept of the priesthood of all believers.
Being God the past and the future, and being the responsibility of all in Church to share their experiences and be taken seriously, it means that we can experience the God of the past through the witness of the older generation, and the God of the future through the witness of the younger one. This understanding allow us to discover the importance to listen the elderly with much respect, and listen to the youngsters with much attention.
We live in ever changing times where organizations seek to reinvent themselves to remain relevant in order to survive and not to die. The same happens with the Church. To remain faithful to the Word of God and relevant to the 21 century, it must evolve maintaining its essence but changing its format.
Change mustn’t be feared but embraced! Listening to the elderly as they remind us of our origins, and to the youth as they decode our future! As Christians we cannot ignore this contribution, but we must take it seriously in all the decision making processes. Doing so we will always correct our course and ensure our relevance.
If we want to avoid the Church to become obsolete, old fashioned and stale, we must humbly listen to the “Alpha and Omega” among us! That is the only way the Church will be able to accomplish its mission in the 21st century.
- What is the older generation reminding the Church of?
- What is the younger generation pointing the Church to?
(The Alpha and Omega, Revelations 1:8 / The priesthood of all believers, 1 Peter 2:9)
